Open when letters for your best friend

The best friendship letters sound like the two of you. Make space for your strange little traditions, everyday encouragement, and stories nobody else tells quite the same way.

Pick moments from their life

Consider what is changing for your friend. A move, new course, new job, or simply a busy season can suggest useful opening moments. Mix comfort with playfulness: a hard day, a first day, a win, a boring afternoon, and a moment when they need a laugh.

Remember what only you would remember

Write down a few details before drafting: a repeated phrase, a favourite snack, an unexpected adventure, or a time they made you feel included. Use one memory per letter, with enough context to bring the moment back.

Let affection sound natural

If your friendship is full of jokes, the letter can be funny. If you normally say things plainly, there is no need to become poetic. Try writing as though you were leaving a longer voice message, then remove the parts that repeat themselves.

Include a tiny invitation

Suggest a low-pressure way to connect when they read it: sending a single emoji, sharing a photo of their day, or adding a song to a shared playlist. Leave room for them to respond in their own time. The letter is a gift, not another task.
